Draft Report on the future of the Yorkshire Dioceses

posted 9 Dec 2010 13:22 by andy wright

The Church of England’s Dioceses Commission has just published its draft report on the future of the Yorkshire Dioceses.

It proposes dissolving the three dioceses of Wakefield, Bradford, and Leeds and Ripon in order to create one new large Diocese of Wakefield with Wakefield Cathedral as its principal cathedral.

Within this new diocese, there would be five new episcopal areas of Wakefield, Bradford, Huddersfield, Leeds and Ripon. Each would have its own area bishop and area council and the report notes: “The area bishops would be, as many have requested, closer in every sense to their clergy and people than it has been possible for the diocesan bishops to be.”

It also recommends that the new diocese would retain all three existing cathedrals, with Wakefield Cathedral as the diocesan see. Bradford Cathedral would remain as a focus of the Church’s ministry in that city and Ripon Cathedral would provide a focus for the Yorkshire Dales.

It recommends the diocesan office should be located in Leeds and overall the new diocese would have the same number of bishops as the current three dioceses but one fewer archdeacon.

The report comes following a year of consultation and research and is open to comment from anyone. Each diocese has until 9 May 2010 to formulate its response and there will be a series of discussions held at deanery and diocesan level here in Wakefield over the coming months.

There will be further revisions and consultations and no scheme is expected to be introduced until 2013 at the earliest. To read the report in full go to: www.diocom.org/yorkshire/report

Installation Service of Reverend Canon Angela Dick

posted 9 Jul 2010 13:06 by andy wright   [ updated 9 Jul 2010 15:07 ]

We all enjoyed a wonderful service on Wednesday as we welcomed Angela as our Priest in Charge and took the first steps of our fellowship together with her.  It was a wonderful service and a pleasure to be a part of.

A big vote of thanks must go from all the congregation to anyone and everyone who played a part in the installation service for Angela.

Those who did a lot, those who did a little, those who were seen running round busily, those who were quietly working away in the background, and to all those who came along and joined in with the singing and helped to eat the buns. Thank you all for a wonderful start to a new era.

Less than a week to go now until Angela Dick is installed as the Priest in Charge at Christ Church Sowerby Bridge.  Hopefully everything is in place that is needed, though if you see Anthea or the Church Wardens running around looking frazzled then please see if you can help.

If travelling by car then you ought to be able to park in one of the main car parks in Sowerby Bridge.  Please note that Lidl have kindly said that we can use the far end of their car park on this particular evening, but please leave the spaces in front of the store free for shoppers. Please keep an eye out for our parking attendants who will help you find a suitable space.

If you are bringing cakes and buns for the buffet, please place them in a tin with your name on, and bring them along on Tuesday, either at the coffee morning, or during the rehearsal for the service which will start at 7pm on Tuesday.

We look forward to seeing you all at 7.30pm on Wednesday to welcome Angela to the Parish of Sowerby Bridge.

Peaks for Poverty

posted 15 Jun 2010 13:09 by andy wright   [ updated 18 Jun 2010 14:47 by James Swallow ]

I am James Swallow and I have been going to Christ church for about 7 years with my wife and as are family has expanded so our two daughters now go.

I read a book called “Nevertheless” by John Kirkby about 1 ½ years ago and since have wanted to be involved with Christians Against Poverty (CAP).

So when the opportunity came along for me to do some sponsored events for them I jumped at the chance – wanting to do everything in one year, and then realising with help from friends and family that was going to be impossible.

However I have decided to register to do one sponsored walk this year – with hopefully many more events to come over the next few years, watch this space !!

On the 10th July I will be taking on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge, 26 miles over the three highest peaks in the Yorkshire Dales.

Firstly I would like to ask for prayers for CAP and the work they do and for myself as I take on this challenge.

Below is an extract from CAP,s website www.capuk.org (for more information about CAP click this link to go to their site)

Christians Against Poverty is a national debt counselling charity working through a network of centres based in local churches. CAP offers hope and a solution to anyone in debt through its unique, in-depth service.

CAP aims to show God’s love in action by providing sustainable poverty relief through debt counselling, advice and practical help. CAP’s unique ‘hands on’ approach empowers people to help themselves out of poverty and be released from the fear, oppression and worry generated by overwhelming debts. We are providing sustainable poverty relief as our service teaches clients vital budgeting skills that will last a lifetime.

The charity operates through a growing network of UK centres, all opened in partnership with a local church. CAP began in 1996 when John Kirkby, armed with a £10 donation, started to help people in his local community who were trapped in debt.

The charity is now a fast-paced, growing organisation whose vision is to answer the national problem of debt in the UK by having at least one CAP centre operating in every major town and city by the year 2021.

Want to know more about the life transforming work of Christians Against Poverty? Order your free copy of the book 'Nevertheless'
- this is John Kirkby’s story of the adventure of starting CAP.

Secondly. What I am going to take on to raise money for this charity.

Whether you call it the 3 peaks of Yorkshire or the North Yorks 3 Peaks, The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge Walk from Horton in Ribblesdale Walk ny101 The Yorkshire Three Peaks) - comprising Pen-y-ghent 694m (2277ft), Whernside 736m (2415ft) and Ingleborough 723m (2372ft) is one of the oldest established walks in the UK.

Despite its popularity however, The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge Walk remains 'unofficial'. It is not marked on Ordnance Survey maps for the area and it is not marked on the ground (except for one dilapidated sign guiding you through the out-buildings of Nether Farm).

By tradition the grueling 37.5km (23.5 miles) must be completed within 12 hours though the actual time taken will vary depending on the stamina of the individual and the prevailing weather conditions. The time you take will also depend on the quality of your Yorkshire Three Peaks Route Guide and how often you get lost!

(Incidentally, our algorithm for producing walk timings suggests this is in fact an 13.5 hour walk - so in any event you will need to step on it).

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge Walk is a rugged, high mountain walk over a variety of terrains and should not be underestimated.

Whilst the walking is generally pretty good it is very long for a single day's hike. It also includes three big climbs totaling 1586m (5202ft) of ascent with the last climb up onto Ingleborough - when the legs are tired and the spirit is weak - being particularly steep.

As with all mountainous areas, the weather can change frequently and very quickly. Swirling mist can descend with little warning and heavy rain can turn hard ground into stamina sapping bog.

Everyone without exception attempting The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge Walk should be fully prepared, fully equipped, carry suitable maps for the area and a fully detailed, up-to-date Yorkshire Three Peaks Route Guide.

The map you will need is Ordnance Survey 1:25000 series Explorer Map OL2 Yorkshire Dales - Southern & Western Area.

Important: The route of the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge Walk is not marked on the Ordnance Survey map, and it is not marked on the ground either,

Double Whammy

posted 8 Jun 2010 14:00 by andy wright   [ updated 9 Jun 2010 14:32 ]

I've put a news article called 'Double Whammy' in the Community Room. This contains some important information about 2 changes to what have been income sources for Churches including ours.

The 2 changes are:

Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme(provides a grant equal to VAT on qualifying expenditure such as the work on our building)is scheduled to end on 31/03/11 &
Gift Aid refund rate is due to reduce to 20% at the same time(this was reduced fron 22% in April 2008 but a transitional relief has been provided-it is this relief which is ending)

There was a website containing a petition for the continuation of the LPOW scheme but I've now discovered this has already been closed!.However you can still write to your MP & there is an example letter attached to this page.
